The project is
located in the town of Takestan, in the region of Qazvin in Iran. As a
small town lacking dynamism it seeks for progress. The client's wish is
to gradually create spaces in the fabric of their town that increase its
vibrancy and mark a shift from a big village to a small city. The brief
for the project requested a solution for designing a landmark at a
large roundabout at the entrance of the town. The
design proposes a monumental public space which aims to insert a sense
of dynamism to the fabric of the city and to the experience of its
users. Metaphorically it uses the characteristic wind of the town of
Takestan and its natural potential energy to find its formal language.
The roundabout has a large area of 18.000 square meters which is not
compatible with a single-object monumental landmark, as is usually
expected. Instead, this design subdivides the area with a geometrical
pattern, which plays a game of highs and lows to create urban furniture.
This pattern is completed with an elevated projection of the surface of
the roundabout on a height of 11 meters, to create a visible landmark
from the distance, in form of balloons floating in the wind. Under this
layer, a very much needed public space is created, transforming the
roundabout into a public square.
